Started writing a tutorial on PGP. With all the current world events happening it’s more important than ever to seize the means of privacy. While there are much simpler tools like Signal or Matrix I wanted to make sure some of my friends had the basics that will always been accessible. Justin shared this article on “The Last Days of Social Media;” would highly recommend it! Lots of the same thoughts and feelings I think most of us have had lately.
Have had a lot of thoughts on “comments.” Many have argued that blogs RSS feeds and emails aren’t enough to create a truly social network. I’m not 100% convinced of that, but I like the option of comments. The question is “how?” Sure I could self host them, but then I have to deal with some kind of auth layer and spam prevention. There’s also Atproto (protocol behind Bluesky) which is also tempting, but I’m not sure I can fully endorse it right now. I also don’t like the idea of making people sign up with Bluesky to start using it. Chat rooms is another option in which case there are options like Matrix. One idea in particular I find interesting is ephemeral chat rooms. Still mulling all of those ideas over and how they could work with Blog Feeds.
